Pender County GOP notice of process for nominating a replacement for a vacant seat

Any Republican registered in Pender County as of December 31, 2022 and residing in District 1 can nominate themselves to be considered for Commissioner to replace Jimmy Tate who resigned.

All nominees must announce their candidacy by sending an email to the Pender County GOP on or before noon on February 7th, 2023 (Eastern Time) with a copy of each nominee’s resume, along with any additional information the nominee believes will be helpful to the committee and pertaining to the position. It is the candidate’s responsibility to confirm the receipt of the candidate’s filing. Candidates should email their resumes to [email protected].

If you are on the Executive Committee you will be notified regarding the date and location of the Executive Meeting which as of this time has not been set. Basically the Executive Committee is comprised of the officers, at large members, elected officials and judges who reside in Pender County and duly elected precinct chairs as well as a the heads of a few Republican organizations.  Obviously those who are deceased (and have not been replaced) or those who have moved out of Pender County can no longer participate as being a registered republican and a resident of Pender County is a pre-requisite.

The Committee will select the candidate by a simple majority vote by secret ballot.  If more than 2 candidates seek this office and no one candidate receives more than 50% of the vote, there will be a run off between the top two candidates. At present it is our intention to allow each candidate a short time to speak to address the Executive Committee but not to be present during the discussion and voting.  However, if there a large number of candidates, we may revise this to shorten the time to speak or request a written statement again, depending upon the number of candidates seeking this office.
